American film had never talked about marriage and polyamory this way b efore\, with this mix of cynicism and warmth\, self-awareness and romanc e. What it understands best is friendship – inside a marriage and outsid e it. Mazursky lets his four leads be ridiculous and sincere in the same breath\, and never condescends to any of them. The Vegas ending\, score d to Bacharach’s “What the World Needs Now\,” is one of the strangest\, most disarming swerves in American comedy.
