fractured identities, unstable time, doubles, desire, and dread. Across four sessions, we will trace the film’s bifurcated characters and nonlinear form; explore Lynch’s use of sound, editing, cinematography, and noir; consider the psychological and supernatural forces that shape its world; and closely examine its enigmatic final sequence, including the desert house that burns in reverse. Through close viewing, discussion, and selected critical readings, we will move beyond the film’s surface to investigate its hidden structures: disrupted narrative, dissociative psychology, surrealist imagery, industrial soundscapes, uncanny objects, and the hallucinatory logic of its imagined Los Angeles. Together, we will develop new ways of watching, and new interpretations of one of Lynch’s most elusive and haunting films.
