1450-1500, this brief talk considers how Sienese artists used different materials to create distinctive visual and devotional experiences. Beginning with Vecchietta’s Resurrection, the talk explores the sculptural possibilities of bronze before turning to two Sienese gold-ground paintings in the Frick’s permanent collection: Duccio’s Temptation of Christ on the Mountain and Christ Bearing the Cross, with a Dominican Friar attributed to the circle of Simone Martini. By moving between bronze sculpture and gold-ground painting, the talk considers how material, surface, light, and scale shape the ways we encounter sacred images. Please meet in the Ian Wardropper Education Room. Assistive listening devices will be available upon request. A repeat session of this program will be offered on January 14 at 1:00 PM.
