Academic Talk: You can count on Entropy! by Austen Mazenko
Join us this Friday, October 16 at 5:30 pm in Warren Weaver Hall Room 109 for an academic talk by Austen Mazenko, a third-year PhD student at Courant with research focusing on probabilistic combinatorics! Read below for the talk's abstract: Abstract: The (Shannon) entropy was initially introduced to capture the amount

of randomness in a given system in the context of information theoretic communication. Among various generalizations and applications of entropy, it has found much use in discrete math as a tool for enumeration. We'll introduce the definition of entropy along with its basic properties, demonstrate some clever applications of the entropy method to specific counting problems, and comment on a few more recent results underpinning its utility.
