the Biddle House from around 1904 to 1933. An 1886 graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Brewster was known for instituting life modeling classes at the Art Students League and the Rhode Island School of Design. A member of the Cooper Union faculty after 1900, Brewster maintained his studio in a barn once located on the northern side of the property (within what today is the front yard facing open on Satterlee Street). Access to the historic house interiors require stairs. Trails, pathways, and sidewalks connect houses and may be uneven. Conference House Park may be reached by the MTA S78 bus to Craig Avenue (at Hylan Boulevard or Amboy Road), or the Tottenville SIR station. Parking lots and nearby street parking are available. Open House New York Weekend is an annual festival that unlocks hundreds of destinations across the five boroughs for behind-the-scenes tours and special activities. Since its founding in the wake of 9/11, when much of the city was closed off due to increased security, OHNY has advocated for openness as a defining principle of civic life. Offering an insider’s look at the forces that shape the city, OHNY promotes a deeper understanding of how the city functions and whom it serves. The theory of change guiding our work is that an informed public fosters greater civic participation, which in turn catalyzes an open city. The Tottenville Historical Society is the premier resource for information about the history and heritage of Tottenville and vicinity. The mission of the Society is to "collect, document and preserve the history and culture of the former village of Tottenville, County of Richmond, Staten Island, New York and vicinity through the collection and preservation of artifacts, photographs and memorabilia, and to share this information with the general public through its website, newsletters, educational programs and exhibits."
