Open Access is a publishing model that seeks to make scholarly research articles (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles) freely accessible to readers. Rather than charging readers to access these articles, some publishers use Author Processing Charges (APCs) for their Open Access publications. When you consider how much a paywalled article may cost or how costly some APCs can be, the cost of knowledge (this year's theme for Open Access week!) becomes tangible and apparent. What does it mean to have our access to knowledge and information paywalled or dependent on APCs? Who do you think is able to participate in producing knowledge through Open Access publications and who is potentially left out? Similarly, who do you think is able to access scholarly research articles and who is potentially left out? This discussion will explore Open Access and the cost of knowledge as it applies to academic publishing and resources and beyond.Thursday, November 19 - Topic: TBA (to be announced)Stay tuned for November's discussion topic!
