Guest Selects: Force Majeure
<p>FORCE MAJEURE is presented as part of our Olivia Wilde Guest Selects for her new film, <a href="http://drafthouse.com/show/the-invite"><strong>THE INVITE</strong></a>.</p> <p><em>Ruben Östlund, the master of excruciating and hilarious cynicism, creates a devastating marital crisis out of two seconds of cowardice on a family ski trip. The brilliance of this film to me is the juxtaposition of chaos and control: man-made explosions reshaping landscapes, politely, in hushed hotel hallways. Östlund shoots in long, locked-off takes that put the performances center stage, letting the tension build with no escape from the frame. The thunderous Vivaldi score acts as a relentless Greek chorus, reminding us of the existential calamity occurring behind tight smiles of domestic desperation. Somehow, this is both the funniest and most devastating movie I’ve ever seen. </em>(Olivia Wilde)</p>
