Guest Selects: Le Bonheur

Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn

LE BONHEUR is presented as part of our Olivia Wilde Guest Selects for her new film, THE INVITE.

Agnès Varda’s 1965 film is built around one of the most beautiful color palettes ever put on screen – milky pastels, sunflower yellows, lush summer greens, picnic blankets that look like they were dipped in light. Cinematographer Jean Rabier shoots it like a series of paintings, with solid color fields between scenes and costumes that melt into the landscape. That palette was the biggest single reference for THE INVITE’s look – the idea that color itself can do real comic and emotional work. Varda treats beauty as a tool, not a decoration, and the film is worth watching on a real screen for that reason alone. (Olivia Wilde)
