Guest Selects: Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice

BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE is presented as part of our Olivia Wilde Guest Selects for her new film, THE INVITE.

Paul Mazursky’s 1969 film is completely of its moment – the encounter groups, the therapy-speak, the newly minted vocabulary of openness. American film had never talked about marriage and polyamory this way before, with this mix of cynicism and warmth, self-awareness and romance. What it understands best is friendship – inside a marriage and outside it. Mazursky lets his four leads be ridiculous and sincere in the same breath, and never condescends to any of them. The Vegas ending, scored to Bacharach’s “What the World Needs Now,” is one of the strangest, most disarming swerves in American comedy. (Olivia Wilde)
