LE BONHEUR is presented as part of our Olivia Wilde Guest Selects for her new film, THE INVITE.

Agnès Varda’s 1965 film is built around one of the most beautiful color palettes ever put on screen – milky pastels, sunflower yellows, lush summer greens, picnic blankets that look like they were dipped in light. Cinematographer Jean Rabier shoots it like a series of paintings, with solid color fields between scenes and costumes that melt into the landscape. That palette was the biggest single reference for THE INVITE’s look – the idea that color itself can do real comic and emotional work. Varda treats beauty as a tool, not a decoration, and the film is worth watching on a real screen for that reason alone. (Olivia Wilde)

Sad Girl Cinema Club: Persona (1966)
Sun Jun 14 · 12pm · Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn

Ingmar Bergman’s PERSONA focuses on Alma (Bibi Andersson), a nurse whose patient – popular actress Elisabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann) – has suddenly stopped speaking. After they move to a cottage, Alma begins to confide in Volger, and the line between patient and caretaker begins to muddle.

Seen by many as one of the greatest films ever made, Bergman’s most personal film is complex, twisted, sensual, and at times utterly hopeless. Andersson and Ullmann are completely engrossing in their roles, taking the viewer down a rabbit hole of psychological unease that’s not unlike a horror movie. PERSONA is beautifully shot and a brilliant web of the female psyche, but above all, it is a staggering achievement in sad girldom.

Weird Wednesday: The Devil Queen
Wed Jun 17 · 7:15pm · Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan

Rio de Janeiro’s criminal underworld is run by an unexpected boss: Diaba (Milton Gonçalves), a femme queen with a taste for power and violence. When the police come after her boy toy, Diaba attempts to find a scapegoat to take the blame and a plot to dethrone Her Majesty arises! Always clad in gloriously colorful outfits and accessories inspired by Afro-Brazilian culture, Diaba runs a mob of eccentric misfits made up of drag queens, pimps, prostitutes, and queer folks of all stripes. The movie’s bold and audacious color palette and camp aesthetic evokes the early films of Pedro Almodóvar, while its stylized and over-the-top violence is giving Quentin Tarantino queer fever dream.

Weird Wednesday: Remember My Name
Wed Jun 17 · 9:30pm · Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn

“You can’t tear out my soul, ‘cause I’ve already done that myself”

The only thing that truly strikes fear in the hearts of men: the past, and when it comes, no one is left unscathed. Freshly out of prison, an unhinged woman, steely-eyed, and manic, with a score to settle wreaks havoc on the life of her former husband (Anthony Perkins). Is it single-minded vengeance, obsession, or something more? An engrossing character study simmering in the rage of a woman over the edge, part melodrama, part noir - this Robert Altman-produced mood piece is as bluesy as its evocative score. Its haunting memory will linger long after its conclusion. Featuring an imitable leading performance by the often-praised, yet little-known, Geraldine Chaplin, this scarcely revived chiller, from director Alan Rudolph, is as beguiling as the twitchy smile of its protagonist. Her name is Emily, and you won’t soon forget her. (Jazmyne Moreno)

35mm print courtesy of Sony Pictures Repertory.

FORCE MAJEURE is presented as part of our Olivia Wilde Guest Selects for her new film, THE INVITE.

Ruben Östlund, the master of excruciating and hilarious cynicism, creates a devastating marital crisis out of two seconds of cowardice on a family ski trip. The brilliance of this film to me is the juxtaposition of chaos and control: man-made explosions reshaping landscapes, politely, in hushed hotel hallways. Östlund shoots in long, locked-off takes that put the performances center stage, letting the tension build with no escape from the frame. The thunderous Vivaldi score acts as a relentless Greek chorus, reminding us of the existential calamity occurring behind tight smiles of domestic desperation. Somehow, this is both the funniest and most devastating movie I’ve ever seen. (Olivia Wilde)

BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE is presented as part of our Olivia Wilde Guest Selects for her new film, THE INVITE.

Paul Mazursky’s 1969 film is completely of its moment – the encounter groups, the therapy-speak, the newly minted vocabulary of openness. American film had never talked about marriage and polyamory this way before, with this mix of cynicism and warmth, self-awareness and romance. What it understands best is friendship – inside a marriage and outside it. Mazursky lets his four leads be ridiculous and sincere in the same breath, and never condescends to any of them. The Vegas ending, scored to Bacharach’s “What the World Needs Now,” is one of the strangest, most disarming swerves in American comedy. (Olivia Wilde)

Queer Film Theory 101: Johnny Guitar
Sun Jun 21 · 5pm · Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn

“I’ve never met a woman who was more man.”

Joan. Crawford. Ms. No Wire Hangers herself. A queer icon. A legendary pair of eyebrows. The Ultimate Movie Star. In choosing which Crawford film to screen as part of Queer Film Theory 101, we really could’ve gone in any direction. We decided to go with a somewhat lesser-known yet highly influential gem from director Nicholas Ray, JOHNNY GUITAR from 1954.

When reformed gunslinger Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden) returns to the small Arizona cattle town he once resided in, he’s met with a complicated reception from his former lover, saloon owner Vienna (Joan Crawford). The drama escalates as Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge), Vienna’s rival, targets her and her establishment for associating with local gang leader “Dancin' Kid” (Scott Brady), the man responsible for killing her brother. Now don’t get it twisted, the film may be called JOHHNY GUITAR, but the real action of this stylized western isn’t focused on the titular Mr. Guitar at all; instead, the true story and so much of the film's queerness comes from the tense and sexually charged relationship between its female leads, Crawford and McCambridge. These two women (and actresses for that matter) hold a bitter and violent resentment of each other, but at the same time, so clearly and desperately want to have gay sex. These two tough cookies can't take their eyes off each other, and every scene they share oozes with hatred and desire. Mix all of this with Crawford’s exceptionally butch styling and dommy mommy charisma, and you’ve got a potently queer-coded film perfect for Queer Film Theory 101. See you out on the range, cowgirls!

Terror Tuesday: Single White Female
Tue Jun 23 · 9:30pm · Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn

Software developer Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) has hit a rough patch: Her boyfriend's a cheat, and her glamourous fashion industry job won't cover his half of her exquisite rent-controlled apartment. Allison's newspaper ad for a roommate introduces her the mousy yet affable Hedra (Jennifer Jason Leigh). But Hedra has a jealous side, and soon it becomes clear she wants everything Allison has, and will stop at nothing to get it. In the shadow of Hitchcock, thrillers of the '80s and '90s paired suspense with sex, and served up horror tropes with a Hollywood sheen. SINGLE WHITE FEMALE is unique among them for its woman-to-woman focus, while standing among a pantheon of films about female identity fugue (PERSONA, VERTIGO, 3 WOMEN, SISTERS). Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the stars run the show here — Bridget Fonda as the strong yet helpless Allison, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, whose performance as the sad and desperate Hedra is the orbit of this sisterly stalker tale.
In the peaceful city of Leisure live Elvira (Claire Wilbur) and Jack (Gerald Grant), a happily married and even more happily swinging couple whose favorite pastime is playing games of sexual seduction with unsuspecting other couples. When Elvira makes a bet that she can successfully bed her painfully naive new friend Betsy (Lynn Lowry) before midnight or else Jack can take a crack at her obviously closeted husband Eddie (Calvin Culver, better known as Casey Donovan), they pull out all the stops to make sure they each get exactly what they want. As the clock edges closer and closer to midnight, will it be Elvira or Jack—or Betsy or Eddie, for that matter—that scores?

Adapted from the Off-Broadway play by future filmmaker Jerry Douglas (Both Ways), Radley Metzger’s SCORE is a tour de force of sophisticated comedy, filled with ingenious visual compositions and scorching sexual tension. One of the few sex films of the era to openly—and hilariously—explore both male and female bisexuality, SCORE is an essential piece of queer cinema history and easily one of the greatest sex comedies ever made. For this special Pride month screening, we’ll be showing the now lesser seen (yet barely different) softcore version of the film.

DCP courtesy of Distribpix, The Rialto Report, and Muscle Distribution

Tue Jun 30 · 9:15pm · Nitehawk Cinema — Williamsburg

Arriving several decades before the rise of J-horror, Japanese filmmaker Noriaki Yuasa (GAMERA) delivers what was ostensibly a children’s film about a young woman arriving at her estranged family’s estate, only to discover sinister secrets lurking within – he then decided his goal was to traumatize his child audience forever. Mirroring many trends popular in European horror at the time, and anticipating the work of Brian De Palma in spots, this 1968 chiller remains a standout of Japan’s steadfast commitment to crafting superb tales of cinematic horror.

Restoration courtesy Arrow Films and the American Genre Film Archive
